그리스도에 대한 애도(哀悼, Lamentation)

그리스도교 미술의 주제.

십자가에서 막 내려놓은 죽은 그리스도를 둘러싸고

비탄에 젖은 성모마리아·막달라마리아·요한,

그 밖의 사람들의 모습을 나타낸 도상(圖像).

11세기 비잔틴시대의 상아부조(象牙浮彫)에 처음으로 나타나

점차로 감정적 표현이 강조되어 갔으나,

복음서나 외전(外典)에는 전거(典據)가 없고,

중세 후기에 그리스도와 마리아의 생애에 대한 묵상(默想)이

성해짐에 따라서 일반적으로 된 상상의 장면이다.

 

그리스도의 시체가 마리아의 무릎에 안겨 있는 단독초상은

＜피에타＞라고 불리며, 13, 14세기에 많이 표현되었다.

본의 미술관에 소장되어 있는 14세기 초 독일 라인지방의

피에타 목상(木像)은 가장 유명한 작품 중 하나이다.

르네상스시대에도 피에타는 인간다운 감정의 표현으로서

 다투어 표현되어, 로마의 산 피에트로 대성당 소장의

미켈란젤로의 피에타(1498∼1500)를 비롯하여 명작이 많다.
