묵시론적 이미지로 가득 찬 노래이다. 인간의 어리석고 오만한 지식이 자신을 파멸시킬 수도 있다는 두려움과 경고를 담고 있다. 영국의 프로그레시브 밴드인 킹 크림슨(King Crimson)이 1969년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 [In The Court Of The Crimson King]에 수록된 곡. 킹 크림슨, 그 중에서 특히 킹 크림슨의 이 첫 앨범은 프로그레시브 락의 역사에 대해 논할 때 빠뜨릴 수 없는 명반이다.
"Epitaph"은 훗날 "에머슨 레이크 앤 파머(Emerson, Lake & Palmer)"를 결성하는 그렉 레이크(Greg Lake)가 노래를 부르고 있다. 우리 나라에서는 이 노래가 의외의 인기를 얻으며 번안되어 불리기도 했다. 노래방 곡목에도 빠짐없이 들어 있고. 킹 크림슨의 음악 성향과 가사의 내용으로 볼 때 특이한 일이다.
Epitaph: 묘비에 죽은 자를 추모하여 새기는 글. 묘비명(墓碑銘).
노래하는 이는 자기 묘비명을 "혼란"이라고 하겠다고 말하고 있다.
하지만 그 말에는 그것이 인류 전체의 묘비명이 될 수도 있다는 암시가 들어 있다.
